MikiLab at school

The bread programme from kindergarten to fifth grade, for teachers. Free, no sign-up.

The lesson contents are in Italian and German for now: switch the site language to Italiano or Deutsch to read them in full.

I can't come to your classroom: early in the morning I'm at the bakery. But MikiLab can. Here you'll find a five-year programme, from first to fifth grade, to bring bread into the classroom: hands in the flour, the patience of yeast, the breads of different countries, the science of the oven. Use it however you like: five years, one year, a single lesson. Children are the future, of bread too.

— Michele, baker

The sheets are written by Sitor, MikiLab's AI guide, on Michele Signorella's method. Teachers adapt them to their class: a starting point, not a rule.

Hands and senses

«Bread is learned with the hands before the head.»

  1. The three ingredients of bread (flour, water, salt) plus an invisible one: time.

    Materials

A whole loaf, flour, water and salt in three small bowls, a magnifying glass.

    How it goes

    1. 1.Pass the loaf from hand to hand: weight, smell, the sound of the crust.
    2. 2.Show the three ingredients: who can guess what's missing? Time: bread isn't made in a hurry.
    3. 3.Each child touches the flour and describes it with one word; write the words on the board.
    4. 4.Cut the bread: crust outside, crumb inside. Count the holes: they're the yeast's air.
    5. 5.Finish with Sitor's question.

    Sitor's question

«Why does bread have holes inside?»

At home. Look at the bread at home: what shape is it? Who made it?

Six dates, one every four weeks, as a calendar file for your phone (.ics). The file is created on the device: nothing is sent.
